June 6, 2003, Newsletter Issue #128: 3 Day Eventing Tips

Tip of the Week

All 3 Day Eventing events begin with Dressage, and are usually followed by Cross Country, however, there are clubs, that for specific reasons, will have the Stadium follow the Dressage and Tracks & Roads phase.

Stadium Jumping is the same as in Jumpers. Rules are the same, unless otherwise specified. In Eventing however, you will start with your score from the Dressage Phase, and then any penalties will be subtracted from the Dressage score, therefore at the end, the winner is the individual that has the highest score. There are clubs that will compute the results in the opposite manner, they will add the penalties to the Dressage score, but. . . . .

In Eventing, you want to keep some of your horses stamina and vitality for the Cross Country Phase. So in performing your Stadium Phase, you want to clear all of the fences, but you don`t want to use up all of your horse.

Try to make your approaches to each fence, square and with plenty of room for strides. The time is usually generous in the Stadium Phase, and not quite so much like Jumpers, where the times are usually quite a bit tighter.

After you walk the course, be sure to get a chance to watch others ride the course so that you can see any potential errors, and adjust your horse and your ride accordingly.

For instance, a fence can appear as a direct and even approach from the last fence; but on the time of the ride, the speed from the previous fence can be faster than anticipated, and any change in sun direction or weather, can alter the approach necessary greatly.

So watch a division go before you, if at all possible, and if you are the first division, watch a few of the riders before your turn.

REMEMBER: Remember to have fun, and to wear a SMILE~!~!
Here’s hoping you have Good GO!s every outing with horses.
