June 20, 2003, Newsletter Issue #130: Tips For 3 Day Eventing

Tip of the Week

Check your scores, and check the scores of others that are in your division; and remember, anything can and usually does happen at horse shows to change the standings on a day by day basis. Keep the thought in your heart, that this time fate just may be on your side, and change the results into your favour. AND, don`t be undaunted by circumstances that would want to lead you to believe differently. As the famous saying goes, it is NOT over, until the the sun has set, and the day has closed. PERIOD. Until the last rider goes, the results are in; and all possibility of any fouls have been opted for, it is not over~!

For this final chapter on Eventing, let me address anxiety. It is something that happens at some point in time to every one of us that competes. It is just that some of us, have a better ability to control and direct anxiety than do others. It takes, time and patience, and the ability to focus--refocus--refocus and concentration on the most important task at hand.

Anxiety is nothing more than the emotional level assuming control over the physical level of your body and mind. Concentration and focus re-establishes the control to a calm and relaxed, yet still alert state of readiness for any situation. It is not that you are solely prepared for a certain set of circumstances, but rather that you are alert to all possibilities, without mentally determining any particular one, so that you are ready for whatsover may arise or present itself.

Too often, we are focused on one particular change of events happening, and are completely unprepared for anything else; and that is what can act against us, in tough and emergency situations that can arise in the final stages of any Horse Show, but especially 3 Day Eventing.

Such as, say your horse has repeatedly had problems with water, and going through it. You are so focused on getting through the water, that you are unable to visually scope the course for any other potential problems that may or may not arise when the situation comes to have your go on the course.

Be alert, not solely for the problems that you have faced in the past, but for all problems that have occurred with horses (either heard from others, read, or seen) in Events; as any and all of them can happen to any one of us given the right set of circumstances.

It is in this "Scopey Awareness" that you will see the presentation of a potential problem long before your horse does, and take control of the situation, and put it behind you both, long before you ever approach it.

This is the formula for those that repeatedly have success in the Show Ring, and in the 3 Day Eventing tests.

REMEMBER: Remember to have fun, and to wear a SMILE~!~!

July will discuss Pleasure Riding Tips.

Here’s hoping you have Good GO!s every outing with horses.
