June 14, 2002, Newsletter Issue #77: Let`s Teach Our Horses To Be Safe & Fun Jumpers

Tip of the Week

First in the Teaching Scope and Finding The Correct Distance is how to teach your horse adjustment of pace and what is impulsion.

Practice cantering the arena with ground poles placed "on the track" around the arena (say, two along the long sides and only one along the short side, and only at one end of the arena).

In practicing the canter over the poles lying on the ground, learn to adjust your horse`s pace (speed) in order that within his/her stride, he/she can simply canter over the poles. Do not have him "jumping" in order to cross the pole on the ground. Simply encourage him to relax and simply canter, smoothly/evenly/continuously without hesitations or tension or nervousness.

Next week we will discuss Impulsion.
