April 5, 2002, Newsletter Issue #69: GETTING READY FOR SPRING SHOWS

Tip of the Week

The first factor to keep in mind when preparing for the local Spring Shows (events/clinics/etc.) is that you want to have your first few experiences out and away from the barn to be positive ones. You don`t want to take your horse alone. . . .neither humanly alone, nor equinely alone. Even if it means sprucing up your pet Mini to take along as a "babysitter" or "hand walker", DO IT! Help out your friends on whom you will rely, by assisting with finishing grooming of their horse, or their tack, or by buying them lunch! They are doing you a G-R-E-A-T service by coming along, or by bringing their horse along!; so BE THERE for them before, during and afterwards in support and friendship. Be prepared for the negative comments from others if you should be bringing along a NON show horse or pet, and combat the negative comments with phrases such as, I know "Riley" isn`t showing today, but he loves "my horse" so much we couldn`t leave him at home, he just simply HAD to come and cheer "my horse" on in each of his classes~! Be CREATIVE, these friends, family and "Pets" are your support system, so YOU be supportive while they are coming along with you~!
